Berlin Psalm Project

  • "a totally beautiful, heartfelt piece of work, everybody sounds great and the writing is just fantastic, congratulations"

    Chris Potter, jazz saxophonist
    NYC, USA

  • “Where prose fails, poetry speaks to the heart. The Psalms are our greatest poems from our heart to God’s. The way the Berlin Psalm Projekt combines these beautiful poems with fantastic musicianship is uplifting and is a much needed tonic from our isolated world today. I believe beauty will save the world and the Berlin Psalm Project is beautiful in so many ways.”

    Glyn MacDonald, pianist
    Christchurch, New Zealand

  • “It’s such a rare treat to experience great art in the service of the greatest of themes. The psalms are beautiful, difficult at times, a lot like life, and I can’t think of a better contemporary musical exploration of its full range of themes.”

Rev Dr Andrew Judd, Lecturer in Old Testament, Ridley College
    Melbourne, Australia

  • "The Berlin Psalm Project impressed me with their breadth of musical expression, mostly lyrical, but at times bold, dramatic and theatrical. All within the spectrum of modern jazz, intricately arranged and performed by a great ensemble of musicians. Not what one would immediately associate with the setting of religious texts but that’s what sets this project apart from many others working in this genre."

    Katya Sourikova, pianist
    Berlin, Germany

  • “The Berlin Psalm Projekt is a sublime work of art, vision and energy. A beautifully nuanced combination of uplifting lyrics, majestic ensemble writing, telepathic improvisation, bubbling textures and infectious groove. Instantly accessible yet driven by a subtle complexity that keeps the listener engaged throughout.”

Mark Lau, Director of Worship Arts, Redeemer Downtown
    NYC, USA

  • '...es bringt zum Klingen, was die Jazzlegende John Coltrane in seiner eigenen Musik verfolgte: My music is the spiritual expression of what I am — my faith, my knowledge, my being.

    Uwe Steinmetz, Saxophone, Komponist
    Munich

  • "An incredible album; outstanding creative writing and musicianship. A joyous and uplifting musical journey!"

    Roger Mannins, Tenor Saxophonist
    New Zealand

The Psalms speak to the deepest inner longing of every human being. Songs of lament, songs of joy, songs of adoration. These songs have been set to music for thousands of years, across time, culture and space. Ali Maegraith brings her own original settings of these ancient and timeless songs to modern jazz. The Berlin Psalm Project debut album was recorded in 2023. Jazz, an art form that is driven by improvisation, capturing the emotion and essence of the moment, provides the perfect setting to explore deeply into what it means to pour out our hearts in vulnerability before God.
